Cable Lockout
Cable lockouts are often part of a broader lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedure, which is a critical safety protocol designed to protect workers from the unintended release of hazardous energy.
Identify Energy Isolation Points: The first step is to locate the energy-isolating devices that control power or energy to the equipment, such as electrical panels, pneumatic valves, or hydraulic pressure switches.
Thread the Cable Through Isolation Points: The cable is threaded through the necessary points on the equipment, ensuring it locks the energy source in the off or neutral position.
Apply the Lock: Once the cable is threaded through, the lock is applied to prevent unauthorized individuals from removing the lockout or re-energizing the system.
Tagging (Optional): A tag can be attached to the lock, indicating who applied the lockout and why, ensuring accountability and clear communication during the maintenance process.
